At Iowa Ortho our foot and ankle team includes two podiatrists, Dr. Dennis Kessler and Dr. Bryan Trout, and one board certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Joseph Galles. Together they work to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible so you can return to the activities that you love. They see patients who have ankle sprains, stress fractures, arthritis and diabetic foot problems, among many other injuries and conditions. Whenever possible our foot and ankle physicians first try nonsurgical treatments such as injections, orthotic shoe inserts or therapy. If these conservative options fail to reduce swelling, pain and stiffness, surgery is discussed.
Some of the most common procedures that our podiatrists perform include toenail removals, Achilles repairs, open reduction internal fixations (ORIF) for foot and ankle fractures, plantar fasciotomies and bunionectomies. Our foot and ankle surgeon offers a number of procedures such as arthroscopic ankle cartilage repair, ankle fracture surgery and ankle fusion. He also performs total ankle replacement surgery and was the first surgeon to do one at Mercy Medical Center of Des Moines. This procedure helps those who have an extreme case of ankle arthritis that has been unresponsive to other treatments. The goal of the surgery is to improve the ankle joint’s range of motion and reduce pain during physical activity.
