What is Regenerative Medicine?
Iowa Ortho combines traditional orthopedics with cutting-edge techniques in regenerative medicine. Coupling our years of orthopedic surgery experience with the latest minimally invasive treatments, Iowa Ortho provides patients a unique scope of options.
Regenerative medicine aids your body in its own healing process. Iowa Ortho offers multiple different types of tissue engineering: Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP Therapy), FloGraft, nSTRIDE, and MACI. All options are non-synthetic cell regeneration methods as the components utilized are from the human body. PRP Therapy, nSTRIDE, and MACI all use your body’s own blood to release growth factors, which promote healing. FloGraft injections use a donor’s birth tissue recovered from a live, healthy C-section. All tissue regeneration options can greatly reduce the need for surgery if injuries are treated before damage is irreversible.
PRP Therapy utilizes a high concentration of the platelet component of the blood to release growth factors, which promote healing. Research studies and clinical practice have proven platelet rich plasma therapy to be successful in reducing pain and returning patients to their everyday lives. The growth factors in platelet rich plasma can initiate and accelerate new tissue growth within injuries to repair damage and relieve symptoms. PRP treatment is commonly used in patients with tendonosis, muscle injury, arthritis, and other causes of chronic pain. PRP injections can also be used as a post-surgery supplement to ACL repairs, Achilles repairs, and joint replacement procedures. Read more.
FloGraft injections, an Applied Biologics product, contain amniotic fluid recovered from a healthy C-section birth. Amniotic fluid is produced during pregnancy to protect the fetus and is harvested during delivery without any harm to the baby or mother. The various growth factors present provide multiple mechanisms for stimulating the healing of tissue. Read more.
IRAP is an Autologous (from your own body) Protein Solution (APS) kit that processes blood to produce an output with high concentrations of anti-inflammatory proteins, which aid your body in its healing process. The treatment is used in people who suffer from mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. The injectable solution has also been shown to protect cartilage cells, which may also slow the progression of osteoarthritis. Read more.
Iowa Ortho’s Dr. Timothy Vinyard offers the MACI treatment for cartilage restoration. The procedure works by taking a small biopsy that contains thousands of patient’s cartilage cells, growing them into millions of cells using a matrix and implanting them into the patient’s injured joint through a small incision. Benefits of this treatment are a quick recovery time and low risk of pain. MACI is appropriate for a range of articular knee cartilage defects. Read more.
