At Iowa Ortho, we’re proud to offer in-house Computed Tomography (CT) scans at our Downtown Des Moines location to provide our patients with fast, high-quality imaging and convenient care—all in one location.

What Is a CT Scan?

A CT scan, or Computed Tomography scan, is a medical imaging technique that combines X-rays with computer processing to create detailed, cross-sectional images of your body. Unlike traditional X-rays, CT scans allow providers to view soft tissues, blood vessels, and bones in much greater detail.

How Does a CT Scan Work?

CT scans take multiple X-ray images from different angles and compile them into a complete, 3D image of the scanned area. The machine is shaped like a large donut, and during the scan, you’ll lie on a table that slowly moves through the center of the scanner. The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive.

When Is a CT Scan Recommended?

CT scans are commonly used for:

  • Diagnosing fractures not visible on standard X-rays
  • Evaluating complex joint injuries or abnormalities
  • Detecting tumors, cysts, or infections
  • Planning for surgeries or other treatments
  • Monitoring healing and post-operative progress

Your Iowa Ortho provider will determine if a CT scan is the best imaging method for your specific condition.

Benefits of Getting a CT Scan at Iowa Ortho

At Iowa Ortho, we’ve streamlined the diagnostic process by offering CT imaging on-site, meaning:

  • Faster diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Convenient scheduling without needing to travel to another facility
  • High-resolution imaging using state-of-the-art technology
  • Specialized interpretation by orthopedic-focused providers

By having CT services in-house, we eliminate delays and improve the overall patient experience.

What to Expect During Your Scan

CT scans typically take only a few minutes. Here’s what to know:

  • You may be asked to change into a gown and remove metal objects.
  • The scan itself is painless—you simply lie still while the machine does the work.
  • There’s no downtime, and you can usually resume your normal activities right away.

Your results will be reviewed by your Iowa Ortho physician, who will use the images to make informed recommendations about your care.

Schedule Your CT Scan with Confidence
