As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, the orthopedic experts at Iowa Ortho have seen an increase in pickleball-related injuries. To help players stay healthy and active, the practice’s specialty-trained doctors are sharing injury prevention tips and guidance for reducing the risk of common injuries. Patients experiencing a pickleball-related injury are encouraged to call 515-247-8400 to schedule an appointment at Iowa Ortho’s Des Moines office, located at 450 Laurel St., Suite A, or at one of the practice’s other locations in Ankeny, Johnston, Pella, Pleasant Hill, Grimes or Waukee.
“Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in our community, and this growth has led to more related injuries,” said fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon Dr. Christopher Vincent. “We’re pleased to see so many people enjoying pickleball, and we encourage players to make injury prevention a priority so they can stay healthy and on the court.”
While some pickleball injuries occur suddenly, many are the result of overuse and repetitive stress on the muscles, joints and tendons. The doctors at Iowa Ortho offer the following insights on common injuries and ways to help prevent them:
- Pickleball elbow: Also known as lateral epicondylitis, pickleball elbow is an overuse injury caused by repetitive swinging motions. Help reduce your risk by warming up before play, using proper technique and allowing time for recovery between sessions.
- Knee injuries: Ligament sprains, meniscus tears and other knee injuries can occur during sudden stops, pivots or falls. Lower your risk by wearing supportive footwear, maintaining good balance and being mindful of your footing on the court.
- Wrist injuries: Falls and improper stroke mechanics can lead to wrist sprains, fractures and other injuries. Protect your wrists by practicing proper technique, using a correctly sized paddle and considering a supportive brace if recommended by your doctor.
- Hip fractures: Falls on the court can result in serious injuries, including hip fractures, particularly in older adults. Help prevent falls by wearing shoes with good traction, keeping the playing surface free of hazards and staying aware of your surroundings.
- Achilles tendon ruptures: Repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon can cause pain and inflammation. Reduce your risk by warming up thoroughly, stretching your calf muscles and gradually increasing the intensity and duration of play.
“Our goal is to help players stay healthy so they can continue enjoying the game,” said Dr. Vincent. “Whether you’re new to pickleball or have been playing for years, proper conditioning, good technique and early evaluation of injuries can make a significant difference in both performance and recovery.”
