Marvin, a hardworking farmer from Jewell, IA, has always been known for his dedication to his land and community. Years ago, a fall from a ladder left him with a debilitating ankle injury and persistent pain that never fully resolved. Surgery and injections brought little relief, and over time, the pain escalated into severe traumatic ankle arthritis.
Realizing he needed a lasting solution for his worsening ankle pain, Marvin began looking for a specialist with the right experience. He was referred to Dr. Joe Galles at Iowa Ortho. Dr. Galles is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in major foot and ankle reconstruction and one of the most experienced and recognized ankle replacement specialists in the state of Iowa.
From the start, Marvin felt a strong sense of trust in Dr. Galles. He was impressed not only by Dr. Galles’ expertise but also by his thoughtful, attentive approach to patient care. Dr. Galles took the time to thoroughly evaluate Marvin’s condition and walk him through his options, ultimately recommending a total ankle replacement. The surgery would take place at Iowa Ortho’s outpatient surgical facility in Grimes, River Hills Surgery Center.
Although Marvin and his wife, Kathy, were optimistic about the procedure, they were understandably cautious about the logistics of going home the same day-especially with their home being an hour’s drive away. Pain management and the potential for complications were top of mind.
However, the experience at River Hills quickly put those worries to rest.
From the moment they arrived, the staff offered clear communication, individualized support, and a high level of professionalism. One team member, Julie Earp, DPT, stood out for the guidance and reassurance she provided. She took time to walk Marvin and Kathy through the recovery process, making sure they understood each step and felt prepared. Her support was especially meaningful to Kathy, who left feeling confident and ready to care for Marvin at home.
Both Marvin and Kathy were deeply appreciative of the care and attention they received-not only from Dr. Galles and Julie, but from every member of the surgical and support team, including the front desk staff, anesthesiologist, and nurses. The entire process was marked by compassion, coordination, efficiency, and genuine concern for Marvin’s well-being.
Now, just a few weeks post-op, Marvin is amazed at how different life already feels. He is excited to see how his new ankle will help him return to the work and activities he loves most. He looks forward to moving more freely and comfortably in the seasons ahead.
