June is National Scoliosis Month, and at Iowa Ortho, we’re here to support you inside and outside of our clinic. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or have lived with scoliosis for years, understanding your pain level and learning the right stretches for scoliosis can help ease discomfort and improve mobility.
Understanding Scoliosis Pain Levels
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that affects people of all ages. It typically presents in three levels of severity:
- Mild: Often not visible to the eye and typically doesn’t require medical intervention.
- Moderate: May require treatment through bracing or physical therapy.
- Severe: Can cause significant discomfort and often requires spinal surgery to correct.
Regardless of severity, stretching exercises can help relieve muscle tension and support spinal alignment. Below are several beginner-friendly scoliosis stretches recommended by our providers.
Stretches to Help Relieve Scoliosis Discomfort
Pelvic Lifts
Strengthens core muscles and supports spinal stability.
- Lie on your back with feet flat and knees bent
- Tighten abdominal muscles and press your lower back toward the floor
- Hold for 5 seconds while breathing normally, then release
- Repeat 10–15 times
Arm and Leg Raises
Improves coordination and targets muscles around the spine.
- Lie on your stomach with arms extended above your head
- Raise one arm while keeping the rest of your body flat
- Hold for a few breaths, then lower and switch sides
- Repeat with each leg
Cat-Camel Stretch
Improves flexibility in the spine and relieves tension.
- Begin on hands and knees with a neutral spine
- Inhale, arch your back upward (like a cat)
- Exhale, drop your belly and lift your head and tailbone
- Repeat 10–15 times, moving with your breath
Bird-Dog
Builds strength in the back and core while improving balance.
- On hands and knees, keep your spine straight
- Extend one arm forward and the opposite leg back
- Hold for a few seconds, then switch sides
- Perform 10 reps per side
When to Talk to Your Doctor
While these stretches can provide temporary relief, they may not be suitable for everyone. Always consult your healthcare provider or spine specialist to create a personalized exercise plan for scoliosis management.
