Mary’s Story

My journey with Iowa Ortho and Dr. Aderibigbe started about a year ago. I had suffered from right hip pain for years. I had a scope done a few years back where I was diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia and arthritis. My hip pain was caused by my funny shaped hip (dysplasia) and years of long distance running. After having the scope, I had to stop running and start walking for exercise. As time went on, my pain increased and I was miserable. The pain radiated down my entire right leg and I began to limp. I sometimes had to ask my family to be my crutch, leaning on them to support me. I had to stop walking because even simple activities were so painful that I would end up in tears. I was beginning to worry about my ability to work, so I went to Dr. Aderibigbe at Iowa Ortho.

Dr. Aderibigbe told me the words I needed to hear. He asked “has your hip affected your quality of life?”.  My husband and I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. Dr. Aderibigbe calmly told me “through the anterior approach hip replacement, I will improve your quality of life”. I am so glad he said those words to me because nothing truer has ever been spoken.

Surgery can be a scary thing and the first few days after surgery were slow for me. However I had surprisingly very little pain. There are no restrictions with the anterior approach. I was encouraged to walk a lot and perform specific exercises. Each day tried to walk a little more. My job is very physical, and I only had to take 6 weeks off from work. What I most appreciated about Dr. Aderibigbe is how he said the words to me “I can improve your quality of life”, because he truly did. He pushed me at my follow-up appointment when he asked “how many miles are you walking?”. He nudged me along at the times I needed it most and was there through every step of my recovery. I appreciate his skills as a surgeon and his calm bed side manner.

I am now a year past my surgery and my right hip range of motion is better than it has been in years. I am able to bike and walk for miles and miles! I am doing aerobics and this year I have hiked a sizeable mountain and even got up on a surfboard! The best part is, I have NO HIP PAIN and absolutely NO LIMP. I recommend the anterior approach to hip replacement to anyone suffering like I was and I am truly grateful to Dr. Aderibigbe and Iowa Ortho for improving my quality of life.
